This Benedictine abbey was founded in the 7th century and is closely linked to the martyrdom of Saint Papour, disciple of Saint Sernin, first bishop of Toulouse. In 1317 under the pontificate of John XXII the abbey church became a cathedral. On the apse of the old cathedral we discover, perched on half-columns, splendid capitals and corbels attributed to the Master of Cabestany. [See also Wikipedia Article]
